Lately I’ve blogged quite a bit from my heart and have explored the delicate space of doubt and fear. So much so that some of my readers may think I’m a pessimist or a blubbering, faithless, burnt-out pastor. This is far from reality. Most days, I have a tenacious faith. The last five years of unpredictability has strengthened my confidence and energized my soul. I believe that we find grace and hope in the darkest of times and love being real and letting others know that “I’ve been there too AND it’s okay!” It is often at our weakest that He makes us strong!
So, what’s so GOOD about this Friday? If you haven’t figured it out yet, my grammar is not superior and so I often turn to the Thesaurus for a little help when I see myself repeating the same words over and over again. When we look up the word GOOD we find several interesting variations. Let’s take a moment and ponder a few “good” synonyms this Friday:
EXCELLENT – What’s so excellent about death?
EXCEPTIONAL, GREAT, WONDERFUL – But, wasn’t it a dark day of difficulty, discomfort, and distress?
POSITIVE – Cup half full?
In German, today is called Karfreitag or “Sorrowful Friday.” In English, the word’s origin is debatable. Some believe it came from an older term, “God’s Friday.” No matter what, the name Good Friday is pertinent because the death and torment of Jesus marked the beautiful culmination of God’s perfect plan to bring forgiveness and life abundant to man!
The Good News is GOOD because the dreadful through the calamity of “Death Friday” brings resurrection. Through the uncomfortable and the ugly we find life and love and hope!
A couple more synonyms:
SATISFYING, VALUABLE – Whatever you are going through, He will perfect it!
SUITABLE, FIT – His grace is sufficient for you. His love is the perfect fit!!
“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and PRAISES shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for GOOD, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the BEST, not the worst; the BEAUTIFUL, not the ugly; things to PRAISE, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most EXCELLENT harmonies.” Philippians 4:6-9, The Message
